First, always keep your propane tanks outside. Do not bring them inside for any reason. Even if you are just performing a routine inspection, this should be done in an open garage or driveway. Keep you propane tank upright in it’s standing position at all times. Propane tanks are filled with a dangerous gas called propane vapor. If you notice the smell of rotten eggs, or know for a fact your propane tank was open in your car, it is vital that you call the fire department immediately. This gas is potentially explosive, and not something you can ignore. Additionally, all tanks should be regularly checked for leaks with soap and water. If you see leaks, do not use the tank under any circumstances. Always be safe when you are handling propane!
